Hip Replacement Recall Victim Regrets Being DePuy’s ‘Poster Lady’

Actress Jane Kaczmarek may soon regret lending her name and reputation to DePuy Orthopaedics.

DePuy’s former “poster lady” for the ASR hip implant, gymnast Penny Brown, is now a victim of the massive DePuy hip replacement recall that has affected nearly 100,000 people around the world.  Ms. Brown now regrets her role in promoting the defective hip implant and she worries that she may have played a part in convincing other people to have the recalled hip implant put in their bodies.

Penny Brown is a former gymnast fron England.  DePuy approcahed her and asked her to lend her name and reputation to promoting the ASR hip implant.  She agreed and DePuy used her story and her image to promote the defective ASR implant around the world.  DePuy flew her to international conferences to promote the hip implant that later would be recalled.

Then, like so many others who have the ASR hip implant, Ms. Brown began to have problems with her hip.  She bang to have constant pain in her hip and noticed a “clunking” sound coming from the hip implant.  After suffering in pain for two years, Ms. Brown found out that her ASR hip implant had failed and had to be replaced.

Penny Brown is now recovering from undergoing a complex, risky, and painful surgery to remove and replace the recalled ASR hip implant that she helped promote.  Not only is she going through her own anguish, be she is worried about the pain she may have caused others.  She said:

I’m extremely angry. As the poster lady for DePuy I’ve not only been let down personally but, as I encouraged others to have it , feel to some extent responsible for their suffering.

Now that it is struggling with the public relations nightmare that was caused the the ASR recall, DePuy recently announced an aggressive marking campaign for the products that it sells that have not yet been recalled.  And DePuy’s new promoter is Emmy-nominated actress Jane Kaczmarek (best known for her role in the TV show Malcom in the Middle.  DePuy is using Ms. Kaczmerek in its cross-country tour called “Anatomy of Movement.”

Meanwhile, DePuy continues to promote its metal-on-metal Pinnacle hip implant, despite thousands of reports to the Food and Drug Administration that the Pinnacle hip implant has caused an adverse reaction.
